Frasier and the Staring Cow Paradox

Inspiration for this blog on staring cows came from a somewhat unexpected side. In the legendary 1990s sitcom "Frasier" the main protagonist, Frasier Crane, has an ongoing issue with his father's dog, Eddie, who incessantly stares at him. In one episode in the first season he desparately asks his father Martin: "Must this dog stare at me all the time?" Martin asks Eddie: "I don't know. Eddie - must ya?" When Eddie keeps staring, Martin concludes: "Apparently he must."

Well, living in Switzerland you soon realize that apparently Swiss cows must stare, too, all the time, at everything and from everywhere - a bit like the late Kim Jong Il, who, as we all know, also liked looking at things. They stare at you from your milk carton in the morning, from the cover of magazines that you read, from random webpages, basically from wherever you look. Of course the cow is something of an (un)official mascot (see our lovely staring Vaquita to the right) for the proud nation of Switzerland, to the extent that they will place a whole herd equipped with bells next to the big rest area south of the Gotthard tunnel to keep the resting tourists awake at night.

Now they seem to have taken the everyday presence of their national animal to the next level. Even outside of Switzerland, staring cows make their presence felt in virtual and other spaces. This blog has set itself the task to document this ever growing global presence by regularly posting images of staring cows in all walks of life. Enjoy!
